Start with the right questions
Ask how the groomer handles nervous dogs, what happens during a first appointment and whether they work one-to-one or in a busy salon. Use our UK dog groomer enquiry to tell us your location and what your dog needs. BR3 Beckenham is a featured area, and enquiries are welcome from across the country.
You do not need to know the technical name for your dog’s coat. A good groomer should translate what you are seeing into a helpful plan, not make you feel behind.
Look for a calm, clean approach
When you visit, notice the pace. Are dogs being handled with attention? Is the space organised and well ventilated? Does the groomer ask about health, sensitivities and behaviour? These small signals tell you more than a polished gallery.
A good groomer is also honest about limits. They may recommend a vet, a different coat length or a second professional when that is the safer choice. Our guide to the signs of good grooming care goes into this in more detail.
Check welfare before convenience
Price, location and availability matter. But your dog’s experience matters more. The RSPCA’s dog grooming advice is a useful authority to read alongside local recommendations.
If the first visit is simply a chat and a sniff around, that can be a very good result. Trust is built in small increments.
